Who We Are.

Cam Sight is one of Cambridge's leading and oldest established local charities. For 90 years we have helped people with sight problems living in Cambridge and the surrounding villages to lead a full, independent and dignified life.

To accomplish this we have friendly, professional staff who visit housebound clients in their homes, particularly those older clients who may be vulnerable and isolated within the community. We aim to help with day to day living, to offer advice, and to give details of other services available to people with sight loss.

What we offer.

We provide a range of free, high quality services to our clients including

  • rehabilitation services.
  • advice and information.
  • specialised equipment, and the necessary training to make the most of it.
  • training in life skills (e.g. cooking, gardening, mobility).
  • social events (music, quizzes, excursions, lunches).
  • telephone support.
  • befriending schemes and volunteer groups.
  • education and awareness events in the wider community.

We have one of best resource centres for visually impaired people in the country with over 700 items of specially modified equipment available to our clients. Here we can spend time, assessing needs, explaining what is on offer for visually impaired people and how we can help them. Our specially converted training kitchen is available for people to relearn culinary skills, and discover for themselves the kitchen appliances and adaptations best suited to their individual needs.

In the last three years we have reached out into the rural areas of Cambridgeshire and set up rural care groups for visually impaired people in towns and villages where we have identified high clusters of blind or partially sighted people . So far we have groups in Linton, Willingham, Histon and Impington, Soham, Haslingfield and Burwell. In so doing we are able to offer support to our clients within their communities.

Support Us.

Without Cam Sight, many visually impaired people would suffer extreme isolation or be forced to rely entirely on others. For many visually impaired people in Cambridgeshire, CamSight is now a primary source of support because we deliver a range of care services under contract to the social services. These contracts however, fund only a minimum level of service to our clients, and in order to continue to offer all our services free we have to raise £180,000 a year.

Apart from a very small grant from Cambridgeshire Social Services we rely totally on charitable donations, and it is the funding we raise from outside the statutory sector that allows us to deliver the standard of care that enables those who need our services to be independent and enjoy a decent quality of life.
